A week after a 28-year-old man was arrested for killing his stepfather over a trivial issue; the police, on Saturday, arrested his mother in abetting the crime and destroying the evidence against her son.

Salma Begum (45) had a second marriage with the deceased, Nazrul Shaikh (48), a tailor by profession.

The couple used to stay in a SRA building located on Marve Road in Malwani, Malad (West), along with Salma’s son from her first marriage Aziz Shaikh alias Pintu (28).

The Malad police said they found Salma had assisted her son in the murder and even though she was an eyewitness, she tried to save her son from being arrested by destroying the evidence.

Senior Police Inspector, V. Aandhale of Malwani police station said, “We have arrested Salma for abetment of murder and common intention. We have booked her because she was present when her son murdered her second husband but did not alert the police.”

On 28 August, Aziz, a daily wage labourer, got into an heated argument with Nazrul after the latter refused to allow him to sell his flat and settle down with the money in his hometown in Uttar Pradesh.

In a fit of rage, Aziz took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Nazrul several times.

Salma was present in the house when the incident took place.

She helped him get rid of the bloodstains on his clothes.

Aziz then rushed to Gaffar Mulla (42), Nazrul’s friend in the neighbourhood claiming that his father had died.

When Mulla went to Nazrul’s residence and saw stab injuries on Nazrul’s body, he suspected foul play.

He informed the police about the incident.
