A 40-year-old woman was arrested by the Samta Nagar police for allegedly murdering another woman and abandoning the body in a metal trunk near Goregaon flyover on June 11.

The police said the accused suspected her husband of having an affair with the victim.

Initial investigation revealed that Shilpa Raut (42), a widow, worked with Vijaykant Srivastav (45), a small-time garment manufacturer, for over five years.

The duo allegedly got into a relationship.

The police questioned Vijaykant, who denied having murdered Raut. However, he told the police that his wife Neelam runs a small-time animation jewellery workshop from home.

The police found embellishment pieces from their home.

“These matched with the few pieces found in the deceased’s hair,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone XII) Satyanarayan Chaudhary.

Bloodstained clothes were also recovered from their Kurar village residence.

Neelam reportedly confessed to killing Raut.

She said she was upset about her husband’s affair with her. On June 11, she allegedly called up Raut saying that Vijaykant was ill.

Neelam asked Raut to come to her home in Kurar village to see him.

The police said when Raut reached their home only Neelam was present and she confronted her about their affair.

A scuffle ensued and Neelam allegedly strangled Raut to death.

The police said Neelam put Raut’s body in a trunk and approached a tempo driver to take it to south Mumbai saying there were embroidery goods in it.

However, on seeing the police nakabandi on the road, she allegedly told the driver everything, who made Neelam get down at the flyover with the trunk and fled.

The police have traced

the tempo driver and may turn him into a witness in the case.
