A woman about to board a local train at Goregaon railway station was hit on her forehead with an iron object by an unidentified man on Monday night.
Injured Rupali Shinde, a Nalasopara resident, received eight stitches on the forehead.
The incident occurred around 8pm while Shinde was on platform number 3, said Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP). She was going to board the second-class ladies compartment on a semi-fast Virar-bound local train.
“As the train was coming to a halt, an unidentified man from the men’s compartment hit Shinde on the left side of her forehead with an iron object. She collapsed as her forehead started bleeding while the accused got off the train and fled,” said a Vasai GRP official.
Police said other women commuters helped the woman get into the train and after she reached Nalasopara, and they alerted the Vasai GRP. A constable then took her to nearby Alliance Hospital.
At the time this story was filed, Shinde’s condition was stable and her statement was being recorded at the hospital. Police said a case would be registered but would be transferred to the Borivali GRP on Tuesday as the crime took place in an area falling under the latter’s jurisdiction.
“We are probing to find out if the attack was deliberate. We will scan the CCTV footage to get leads on the accused,” said a police official.
“Shinde did not see the face of her attacker and is thus unable to help us prepare his sketch.”
Shinde works with a private firm in Goregaon.
