The high-profile murder case of Pallavi Purkayastha and the case of rape of a Spanish woman will now be tried by a woman judge, PV Ganediwala, who has been specially assigned to try cases related to atrocities against women.

Sources from the crime branch said that the prosecution had insisted that the case be tried by a woman judge. The decision on appointing a woman judge to hear such cases was taken considering the plight of the victims and the sensitivity of the cases.

As per the prosecution’s case, Pallavi, 25, daughter of IAS officer Atanu Purkayastha and advisor with film-maker Farhan Akhtar’s firm Excel Entertainment Pvt Ltd, was found covered in blood in her apartment at Himalayan Heights in Wadala by her live-in partner Avik Sengupta on August 9.

The crime branch had, the next day, arrested the watchman of the building Sajjad Mogul when he was trying to escape to his native place Uri in Jammu and Kashmir.

The prosecution alleged that Mogul wanted to get physical with the lawyer. When she turned him down, he tried to rape her and brutally murdered her.

In the Spanish woman’s case, Mohammad Ansari alias Badshah, a history-sheeter raped and robbed the 27-year-old foreign national. He had unnatural sex with her before robbing her of her belongings.

The Bandra police had filed a charge sheet in the case last month and the case was committed to the sessions court for trial earlier this month.
