A clerk with the Indian Navy allegedly killed her eight-month-old son before killing herself at their flat in a seven-storey building at Mahim on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Swara Kaskar, 42, and her son has been identified as Harsh. The incident occurred inside Kaskar’s second floor flat of the building.

“Swara left a suicide note stating that she was depressed. She slit her son’s throat first before slitting her own,” said Mahesh Patil, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 5.

The Kaskars have two flats in Mahim. On Wednesday, Swara left the flat that the family was living in after telling her husband that she was taking her son to a garden.

Kaskar, instead, went to their other flat near Citylight cinema where she killed her son and herself.

The incident came to light when Swara’s husband Savlaram started to get worried when she did not return for a long time.

“I called up her brother to check her if she had come to his house, but he said he had no idea. I then called a neighbour in the building near Citylight. The neighbour told me that he had been banging on the door which was locked from the inside and there was no response,” said Savlaram.

He said, “I then rushed to our flat in that building and checked from the window when I saw bloodstains all over and informed the police.”

The police reached the spot and broke down the door.

“She had been depressed ever since the birth of our child and had been worried about who would take care of him. I had even left my job to start looking after our son, but she still had to take medication for depression,” said Savlaram.

The couple had tied knot in 2012 while Harsh was born in September 2014.

Till the time of going to press, the police were in the process of registering a case.
