A 25-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped and set on fire by her spurned suitor and three other men at her Antop Hill home in central Mumbai on Monday, police said.
All four were arrested hours later. Three of them — Rajesh Devendra (30), Kumar Deven-dra (28), Nitya Devendra (25) — are brothers. The fourth is their friend Shankar Mudliar (35).
The victim was home alone when the incident occurred, police said. The victim’s sister, Simi (name changed), who came to visit about 10 minutes later, witnessed the incident. Speaking to HT, she said, “The door was locked from inside. I knocked but there was no response. The lights were switched off but I could hear a lot of noise from inside.”
When she peeped inside, the accused were raping her sister, she said. “I rushed to tell my parents but they weren’t home,” said Simi. She returned to the victim’s house and saw the men setting her sister on fire.
“They have been booked for gangrape and murder,” said Sanjay Baviskar, deputy commissioner of police, Zone IV, adding the motive behind the killing was the victim’s refusal to marry one of the accused.
