Neetu Sharma, a 27-year-old graduate, allegedly kidnapped her sister Deepkamal’s daughter Shreya and flung her off the 10-metre high Charkop depot bridge on Thursday afternoon.

Police officials said a scrap dealer, Karim Khan, saw Neetu bring the child in a rickshaw to the bridge and throw her down from the bridge.

“He ran behind Neetu but she fled in the rickshaw. He and two others rescued Shreya. She had landed in a marshy land and did not suffer serious injuries,” said Inspector Purshotam Gawde.

Sharma reportedly told the police that she did all this because she did not want to marry the man Deepkamal (35) had selected for her.

She wanted to marry her boyfriend who Deepkamal did not approve of because he was a Class 10 dropout.

Deepkamal had raised the accused and her younger brother after their parents’ death. “Her marriage date was nearing. She hoped to kill Shreya so that the marriage would get postponed or cancelled,” said Gawde.

Sharma will be produced in court on Friday.
