A 34-year-old woman flung her six-year-old son from a seven-storeyed building in Dahisar (East) on Saturday before jumping off herself.
Dipti Chauhan, a housewife, used to live with her stock-broker husband Nilesh, 38 and son Siddhesh in Alaknanda Society.
The police have arrested Dipti’s brother-in-law Bharat, his wife Sarla and father-in-law Kantilal, said ACP (north) Ramrao Pawar. They have been charged with abetment of suicide after Dipti’s parents filed a complaint.According to the police, the incident took place around 12.15pm. Dipti took the terrace keys from the watchman and took her son there. Residents said Siddhesh had taken his toys with him and after 10 minutes on the terrace, Dipti covered his eyes with a piece of cloth and tossed him off the terrace. Seconds later, Dipti jumped.
When Siddhesh landed on the ground, Shashikant Mistry, an employee at one of the shops located on the ground floor of the building, rushed to check if he was alive. Dipti crashed onto Mistry, injuring him.
Dipti’s parents, who reside at Mumbai Central said, “My daughter’s brother in-law and his wife — Bharat and Sarla —had come to her house two days ago and quarrelled with her. They said hurtful things.”
Police said, “No suicide note was found (with the victim) but later it was learnt that Bharat was responsibile for the extreme step. Bharat and his wife had lunch with Dipti at her house two days ago,” said ACP Sunil Deshmukh.
“...They alleged that Dipti had an extra marital affair and Siddhesh was not Nilesh’s biological child...” he said.
An upset Dipti decided to go to her maternal home in Tardeo, he said. “Yesterday she left home and went to railway station but returned home without going to her maternal house. Today afternoon, she ended her life,” Deshmukh added.
Om Prakash Dubey, an eyewitness, said, “...Both landed on their heads and died on the spot. We informed the police and rushed them to Bhagwati Hospital...” He added Nilesh rushed down only after people started shouting for help.
Sarita Naik, Dipti’s neighbour said, “She was a very nice woman and very helpful. We do not know what led her to take such a drastic step.” Another neighbour said that the couple used to argue frequently. Apparently, the couple had an argument on Saturday morning before Dipti left the house.
