After recording the statements of the parents and brother of the 30-year-old woman who had tried to commit suicide on Wednesday, the DN Nagar police have concluded that the woman was depressed after her friend Vishal Gambhir, 33, leapt to his death from his 18th floor apartment in Oberoi Woods tower, Goregaon two days earlier.

The woman continues to be in a critical condition at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. She has sustained multiple fractures and underwent surgery on Thursday, according to the police.

Her parents reportedly told the police that she and Gambhir were planning to get married after separating from their respective spouses. The woman was staying with her parents in Manish Nagar, Andheri, while her husband had moved in with his parents. After Gambhir’s suicide, she kept to herself and did not interact much, they said.

"It is clear that the woman had tried to commit suicide. We have recorded the statements of her family. Further investigations into the case are on," said Vijay Bhoite, senior police inspector of DN Nagar police station. "We have not booked her for attempt to commit suicide yet."

The police have not recorded the woman’s statement so far, as she is not yet in a position to talk.

The police said that when the woman jumped off the flat at 12.30pm on Wednesday, her mother and brother were at home. But they were not aware of the incident till they received a call from the police.

Gambhir, who was the vice president (operations) of a well-known multinational private bank, had gone to his Goregaon house on Monday around 3:30pm along with the woman. He consumed some liquor, and was reportedly very frustrated, as he could not marry her, the police said. Around 6:30pm, he jumped off from the balcony of his rented apartment. Gambhir had separated from his wife but was yet to get legally divorced. The Aarey Sub police have registered a case of accidental death.
