The plush Juhu locality, which houses actors like Hema Malini and Shatrughan Sinha, will have to bear with the stench emanated from a broken sewerage pipe at the Vaikhuntlal Mehta Road outside actor Amitabh Bachchan’s residence, Jalsa, for at least four days more, according to civic officials.

For the past few weeks, residents have been complaining that the sewerage pipe at the JVPD scheme has been choked. As the authorities paid no heed, the underground pipe burst on Saturday.

Civic officials said the repair work at the spot has started. “It is a major sewer line with 355mm diameter. The affected portion of the pipeline will be replaced. As the road is made of cement concrete, it will take time to dig up the stretch, after which the new pipeline will be laid,” said RM Chaukar, deputy chief engineer, sewerage operations.

“A detailed inquiry will be initiated later. We have now put up dewatering pumps to flush out the sewage water. The equipment will be used till we complete the repair work. The work is being undertaken on war-footing,” said Chaukar.

“The area stinks. We are also getting drinking water that is contaminated with sewage,” said Mehjabeen Barwani, a local resident. “The sewerage line has been choked for many days, but we were unable to locate the area. Two days ago, the pipeline burst. We later realised it was outside Bachchan’s house,” said an official.

The cause of the burst is yet to be ascertained.
