A construction worker was crushed to death on Monday when a four-storey under-construction building collapsed in sector 20 at Airoli. The incident occurred at around 1.30 am.
Rescuers took more than three hours to extricate the worker’s body from the debris. The deceased is yet to be identified.
According to Nasser Pathan, senior police inspector of Rabale police station, “The slab work of the building was going on. The worker had gone inside to sleep when the accident took place.”
The police have arrested the builder, Ashok Sanghvi and supervisor Arun Shirode, on charges of negligence causing death.
Airoli ward officer Balkrishna Patil said, “The builder had been given a commencement certificate for the construction. He was constructing one room above the other for a single household. He had undertaken vertical construction because the plot was small.”
“We will now inquire if the construction was in conformity with the permission granted,” he added.
“We are inquiring if the builder had permission to build such a tall building on the plot earmarked for Project Affected People. We will also source information from the civic body to find out if there had been any irregularities,” Pathan said.
