With a view to improving east-west connectivity, the Western Railway (WR) opened two foot-over bridges (FOBs) at Charni Road and Andheri on Monday.

The Charni Road FOB is 3 metres wide and 29 metres long and has been constructed at the north end in lieu of the old bridge that is beyond repair.

Another FOB has been opened for the public near Andheri railway station between Andheri and Jogeshwari. This bridge is 5 metres wide.

WR has added 19 FOBs in the last five years. At present, there are 92 FOBs and eight subways on the WR suburban section. A massive increase in FOBs on the suburban section has been planned.

Work on construction of new FOBs is currently going on at Kandivli, Goregaon, Malad, Naigaon, Virar, Dadar, Jogeshwari and two subways are being constructed at Vasai Road and Naigaon stations. Nine more FOBs are proposed at Dadar, Borivli, and Bhayander.
