Your ride on the city’s roads is set to get worse. Along with the pothole-filled roads, you will now have to deal with traffic diversions too.
Desperate to rid the city of potholes, at least temporarily, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked the Mumbai traffic police for permission to allow pothole-filling work during the day.
Currently, minor repair work is carried out unofficially in the day. For major repair work, which BMC has sought permission for, lanes or roads will need to be blocked and traffic diverted.
The civic body will now start fixing potholes between 12pm to 4pm, when the traffic is comparatively less. Till now, the civic body had been filing potholes only after midnight, when patches of roads could be cordoned off.
Additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta said: “We have already received the nod from the traffic police. During dry spells, even the sun would be out making it a favourable time.”
However, Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Vivek Phansalkar said that nothing had been finalised yet. “We have not accepted any demand. We will agree to whatever is possible and is in the larger interest.”
Gupta clarified that no road would be blocked during the exercise. “We will carry out work one lane at a time. We will just keep one particular lane shut for traffic, while the other lanes would be operational”, Gupta added.
