The college principal said she was not aware as to why he might have taken such a step.

A case was registered at Khandveli police station after one of the professors called the police on Friday.

The police had sent the body for a post-mortem and have also preserved the viscera of the deceased for chemical examination, said police inspector Pinal Rohi.

Sunil Lalchandani, head of the BMS department, who was on the trip said on the night of his death Mangtani was found smoking in his room during a surprise check by the professors. They then informed his parents. Fifteen minutes later he jumped from his room on the third floor.

“We have no idea if he was depressed,” said Bhavna Motwani, the college’s principal. “We are all in a state of shock. He was like one of my own children.”

The police has recorded statements of students, resort employees and professors and the investigation is still on. The parents will also be questioned, said police.

The last Facebook message on Mangtani’s page says, “Soooooo my last status m signing off can’t tolerate life any more byeeeeee every 1.....!!!!!!”.

Mangtani’s body was brought back to the city on by his parents. His last rites were conducted on Friday, said Motwani. The boy’s parents have so far not lodged any complaint against the college.

The college cancelled the rest of the visit. The Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) has filed a complaint at Ulhasnagar police station against the college.

“Based on the information we have the college is responsible and the authorities have not behaved properly,” said Hrishikesh Joshi, MNVS vice president.
