The LT Marg police are checking the CCTV footage obtained from Mateshwari Jewellers in Zaveri Bazaar to trace Devraj Mishra, 40, a security guard, who stole cash, gold and silver worth over Rs80 lakh earlier in the week.

"The videos are blurred as the CCTV cameras did not have night vision," said Ashok Sarambalkar, inspector, LT Marg police station. "We have sent the footage to technicians to get clearer images. Also, we are tracing Devraj's phone. We will get the footage and the phone records in the next two days."

According to the police, Devraj had allegedly spiked the cough syrup he gave to the night security guard, Anil Mishra, 50. He then used a screwdriver to open the shop door and escaped with Rs2.5 lakh cash, 2kg gold and 25kg silver.

"Devraj would often get me medicines for my cough. Soon after I had the cough syrup, I started to feel dizzy and fell on the floor, unconscious," said Anil, adding that he resumed consciousness 48 hours after he was allegedly drugged at 2am on Sunday. He was discovered by his brother Mahendra at 11.30am on Monday.

Anil was shifted to the general ward from the ICU at GT Hospital on Thursday.

Anil said he had been working at the store for 12 years. "Devraj was fired by his three previous employers. Three years ago, he came to me looking for a job. I requested my employer to hire him. He would sleep in my quarters and would even eat with me. Everybody liked him because he was a smooth talker. I cannot believe he did this," he said.

Anil said that Devraj, who is originally from Azamgarh, was married to a women form Nalasopara.
