Highlight Story

This Delhi-based band will be rocking the city tomorrow. Amlan Nayar, vocalist of the band, talks about the band’s musical endeavours and plans.

What kind of music do you play and who inspires you?
Root Murphy is an alternative rock project and we are inspired by bands such as Porcupine Tree, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead and Lamb Of God. We appreciate all forms of music, be it sufi, classical or electro.

How did you all come together and what’s the story behind the band’s name?
Most of us met in our schools and colleges and identified with each other as people to jam and make music with. As for the band’s name, ‘Root Murphy’ stood out because it meant nothing, but sounded quite nice. We like to keep it simple yet intriguing.

What do you think of the music scene in Delhi?
The music scene in Delhi has changed and progressed to new levels. There used to be a time when there were only a small number of bands. Now, there is so much to choose from. Musicians in Delhi have become professional enough that a career in this field can now be considered seriously.

Which are the other city-based bands that you like?
Them Clones, Skyharbor, Nasya, Indigo Children, Cyanide, Junkyard Groove, Avial, Thermal and a Quarter, and Chaos.

How conducive is the city to your music-making? Do you have easy access to jam pads?
There are many jam pads available in the city, though there is a lack of equipments and space in a few. We are regular with Sound Station in Okhla.

Can you tell us about your upcoming gig?
We are playing for Emergence, which is a competition among rock bands. We are competing with the bands, Ebonix and Doppler Effect. Out of these three bands, one band would be chosen to go to the next round — the finals.
