Arjun Kanungo believes that singers should feature in their own music videos
The ‘Baaki baatein peene baad’ hit-maker has always been vocal about the need for singers to be more noticed in an industry where actors are the face of everything.
Arjun Kanungo shot to popularity with his hit single ‘Baaki baatein peene baad’. Since then, he has released singles such as ‘Fursat’ and ‘Ek dafaa’, but he says it wasn’t easy for him to get noticed. “Before ‘Baaki baatein peene baad’ came out, nobody was interested in it. I played it to many people because it was my debut song and I wanted their blessings. Honestly, nobody said ‘yaa it is a good song,’ they all said, ‘It is different. We have not heard something like this and it might not work’,” he says.
He believes there is always apprehension with something new because it is “untested”. He is quick to add that it’s the purpose of pop music. “The function of pop music and independent music is to push the boundaries of what Bollywood can’t do. Bollywood will always cater to the mass audience and sometimes it needs someone else to tell them what the larger audience is willing to listen to,” says the singer-composer.
He has been vocal about the need for singers to be more noticed in an industry where actors are the face of everything. About singers being featured in their music videos instead of Bollywood actors, he says, “I am not opposed to the trend per se. But I think singers should feature in their own video. I don’t think singers realise that the new generation doesn’t care whether you look or dance like a Bollywood actor or not. They want to see what you dance and look like.”
