Remember John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John setting the dance floor on fire in the 1978 film, Grease? Now Mumbaikars will be able to experience the same magic in a new version of the acclaimed musical.
Conceptualised by Ace Productions, the show will premiere in the city on August 24. It will feature Tara Sutaria and Khurshed Mogrelia in the lead roles. The two young artistes were selected from the auditions which took place in August last year.
“Working on Grease has been a long journey for all of us,” says Sutaria, who plays Sandy. Talking about his role and the experience of working on the musical, Mogrelia says, “I play Danny, the male lead. A year of relentless hard work has gone into the role. I had given auditions for this play in September last year. I have seen so many Grease adaptations, but this one is done in a very different way.”
The cast of the musical also includes Cyrus Broacha, Karla Singh, Shahriyar Atai, Dilnaz Irani and Siddharth Meghani. The original musical was written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, and revolved around social issues such as teenage pregnancy and gang violence. This production’s themes include love, friendship, teenage rebellion and class conflict. It has been reinterpreted by Advait Hazrat and will feature live music performances, aerial acts, dance segments, cars and bikes on the stage.
Grease will be staged on August 24 and 25, at Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, at 4 pm and 7.30 pm.
