It’s not about how well you sing, but how confidently you do it. That’s the message from Kamran Khurshid, last year’s national winner (male category) of the Karaoke World Championship (KWC), who went on to represent India at the finale in Ireland. The 26-year-old Kolkata-based HR professional was joined by Megha Girish, 26, a freelance online content and sales executive from Hyderabad, who had won the national title among females.
KWC is currently holding its first qualifying round at various cities in the country. “You don’t need to register prior to the trials. Anyone can walk in at the venue and participate. The two best males and females, along with one best group entry will then compete in the venue finale, which taps the best talent from each city,” says Amla Pendse, venue co-ordinator, KWC, India. Winners from this round move up to the zonals, and finally compete in the national round. The national entries then get an opportunity to represent India abroad.
Megha, who took part in the local round of the competition after hearing about it from a friend, even went on to feature in the top 20 at the international event, where she sang Michael Jackson’s ‘Who’s loving you...’. “When I entered the local round, I thought, let me give it a shot. I never imagined that I’d go on to win the nationals,” says Megha.
Kamran has an amusing story to tell. ‘My brother wanted to participate, so I accompanied him for the trials. But since he was under 18, he couldn’t. So I decided to sing ‘Unchained melody...’ by Righteous Brothers.” In Ireland, both admit, they had the time of their lives. In fact, participating in KWC also got them thinking seriously about pursuing music. While Kamran performs gigs as a solo artiste, Megha is writing her own music and gearing up to be a professional singer.
