They have created back-to-back hits songs like Singh is king…, Aloo chaat…, Paisa paisa…, Saddi gali…, Yamla pagla deewana…’and the latest Shera di kaum… from Speedy Singhs. And now, band RDB (acronym for Rhythm, Dhol, Bass) is working on what they call their “personal album”. The band, for the uninitiated, is a group consisting of the UK-based brothers Kuly, Manj and Surj.
“One of our biggest imminent projects is our personal album called Worldwide. This will feature a host of artistes as well as some major collaborations,” says Kuly, adding they have a lot to look forward to from Bollywood to mainstream collaborations.
These days, RDB is reveling in the success of Shera di kaum…. “It certainly had a unique uplifting feel to it when we were composing the music. And having two greats from the West in the form of Ludacris and from the East in the form of Akshay Kumar; we had a strong feeling that the song would resonate and connect the world over,” says Surj.
For the song, they have teamed up with Grammy-winning American rapper Ludacris. “Just like when we approached Snoop Dogg for ‘Singh is king…’, Ludacris was just as much, if not more excited to be part of the track and the video. When he sent us his vocals, they fit so well with our composition and arrangement, there was very little tweaking required to his rap,” says Manj.
Interestingly, RDB has delivered several hits for Akshay’s films like Namastey London (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), De Dana Dan (2009), Kambakkht Ishq (2009) and now Speedy Singhs. “Akshay’s projects have always been lucky for us, and vice versa. But we truly feel that when you’re driven with passion to create something out of the box, your true talents and colours shine like a star on your work,” says Manj.
However, they do accept that eventually they would like to do the score for a Bollywood film. “But as of now we like to think of ourselves as ‘Bollywood hit makers’,” says Kuly, adding that the group’s record label will showcase well-known artists like Nindy Kaur of Om mangalam… and Aloo chaat… fame and Parichay… from Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011). “These artistes will also be releasing their own albums as well as collaborating with us on Bollywood projects,” says Surj.
