Accidents sometimes lead to amazing discoveries. Like a brand new set list for example. City’s shredder Warren Mendonsa’s outfit Blackstratblues was slated to play at Hard Rock Café tonight. Only Mendonsa found himself dealing with a rather bizarre epiphany a week before.
“I realised that half of my live band is already playing other gigs elsewhere, so I decided to invite other artistes to play for the night,” says Mendonsa, who will have a plethora of rockers from the city, guest with him and his guitar tonight at the Blackstratblues gig.
So instead of the regular line-up, Mendonsa will play with his rather famous uncle Loy Mendonsa on bass. “Loy is a great musician and he offered to play with us. He is amongst India’s best bass players as well,” says Mendonsa.
Blackstratblues is the solo project of Warren Mendonsa, who is a guitarist, songwriter, producer and recording engineer. From being a part of the popular rock act Zero to having worked with Bollywood stalwarts like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and even Vishal Shekhar, even Tough on Tobacco and Soulmate – Mendonsa also pioneered the rock evolution on Mumbai. He has released two albums with Blackstratblues called Nights in Shining Karma (2007) and The New Album (2009). Now based in New Zealand, Mendonsa comes down to India every once in a while to play a tour or two.
Others who will be guesting with Mendonsa tonight include Saba Azad, Shefali and Joe Alvares, Shazneen, Vinay Lobo and Clinton. “There will be a lot of blues, RnB, soul. We will be playing tunes from old times. It should be a great night,” says Mendonsa. There will be, however, only two Blackstratblues original instrumentals. “I will be playing a new track that I wrote recently and an old one from a previous album,” says Mendonsa. The artiste is in India till January and will be gigging throughout the nation.
