It’s the biggest awards night for music lovers, talked around the world as much for the winners and losers as those outrageous dresses red carpet regulars love to flaunt. Flashing flesh may have become passé over the years at the Grammys, but there has never been a dearth of the weird. Here’s a look at some of the bizarre, quirky and plain outlandish dresses this awards night has seen over the years. Watch this space for additions from this year’s gala.

1. Margaret Cho, in 2004: A decade ago, her sheer dress, with peacock feathers attached, was the last word in weird. We don’t know why she chose this look, but we are sure of one thing: Nobody would have said choo sweet to her!

2. M.I.A, in 2009: Who wears a black net dress with white polka dots? If you are M.I.A, you’d think it is a fashion statement. Needless to say, there was a clash between what she believed and fashion’s rules. No prizes for guessing who had the last laugh here.

3. Toni Braxton, in 2001: We first thought her white-too-many-slits dress was a wardrobe malfunction. Then we realised it was the only way Braxton could expose more than what any other dress ever could. Not surprising that our newsroom was divided into two halves of men and women, and you know why.

4. Jennifer Lopez, in 2000: The Waiting For Tonight singer shocked everyone by walking the red carpet in what many thought was a sarong. Yeah, you read it right... just a sarong! Now, we don’t know about you, but this is no fashion statement by any stretch of imagination.

5. Al Walser, in 2013: This has to be the most bizarre of the lot: Walser came wearing an astronaut’s outfit, complete with a flag bearing his name, for the big night. No, he was not back from the moon the next time we heard of him. Why Walser, you couldn’t find a tux of your size?

6. Lady Gaga, in 2011: Correction: This one has to be the most bizarre of this list! The Lady made her grand entry on the big stage by carrying an egg with her. Now, given her obnoxious taste in all things fashion, it should take a lot to offend us. Still, an egg for the Grammys?

7. Imogen Heap, in 2007: Nothing wrong with the black dress, but her shabby hairdo and that stick umbrella killed it completely. Heap even carried a toy frog with her! Did she confuse the award ceremony with some jungle party?

8. OK Go, in 2007: The American alternative rock band ‘scared’ the audience wearing a mask and a golden outfit for big night. Trouble is, it was a damp squib. They looked more funny than scary!

9. Lil’ Kim, in 2002: Her Chanel racer outfit did nothing to fast-track her career prospects post this appearance. Fact is, she never looked to be in the driver’s seat ever after this faux paus.

10. Nadeea, in 2010: Talking of turning heads, Nadeea’s black outfit with silver shimmering jacket helped her get all the attention. Enough to absolve her of going totally wrong with this look. We don’t think so.
