Playback singer Hema Sardesai is back after a hiatus. The singer of hits such as
Awaara Bhawre
and
Ishq Chaandi Hai
, says her next album is dedicated to women empowerment.
Film music has gone through a sea change since your first song with AR Rahman in
Sapnay
. Comment. There definitely has been lesser emphasis on playback music itself in our films, unlike before wherein the songs and the voice played a pivotal role. What is sad today is that star playback singers are hardly heard today. That is contributing to the slow but steady downfall of music.
We haven’t heard much from you of late. What’s keeping you busy?
Yes, I haven’t done a film song after
Badal Pe Paon
Hai
(
Chak De! India
, 2007). That’s partially because I’m involved with social causes such as ‘Save the Girl Child’.
The Women’s Bill has been passed in the Parliament. Are you also involved with projects related to women empowerment
?
Cheers, ladies! We deserve this and much more. Though I’m not a feminist, I believe in equal rights for men and women. Right from my Hindustani Gudiya album, wherein I wrote the script for the video of the song, I’ve depicted the plight of the girl child. In 2007, I directed a video on ‘Save the Girl Child’ and got good response.
For the last three years I’ve been writing/composing/singing songs on women empowerment for the AOL International Women’s Conferences. Also, my songs, including the new one titled
She is a Leader
were released on
artisaloud.com
in January this year.
Any private album in the offing?
My album of inspirational songs for women will be released soon.
