With Bollywood churning out one saleable item number after another, here’s something that will bring a sigh of relief to the growing community of metalheads in the country.

In an interesting case of indie-meets-commercial, Mumbai-based death metal band Bhayanak Maut has composed one of the tracks for Bejoy Nambiar’s Shaitan, starring actors Kalki Koechlin and Rajeev Khandelwal.

“Bejoy is a good friend and he happened to like one of the songs from our album. When he asked us whether he could use it for his film, we blindly said yes”, says the vocalist Vinay Venkatesh.

The band, that recently returned from playing at the Inferno metal fest in Oslo, Norway, will be seen performing at the music launch of Shaitan at Hard Rock Café tomorrow night.

Shock and awe
“We have performed at that venue many times in the past, but this is the first time we’ll be playing at a film music launch. With the kind of music we play, we would love to see the expressions on the audiences’ faces that day”, jokes Venkatesh.

The chosen number titled Habemus papum… was taken from the band’s 2009 untitled album, and will appear as ‘The unleashed…’ in the Shaitan soundtrack.

“I have been told that the placement of the track is in a prominent fight sequence in the movie”, says Venkatesh adding, “Bejoy’s work is
experimental and hence our music goes with the feel of his film.”

Ask him whether this could be mean a promising entry to a possible future in Bollywood, he says, “It is extremely optimistic of us to think that death metal and Hindi movies can go hand in hand.”
