Manna Dey’s demise has brought back the issue of alleged siphoning off of money by the singer’s nephew from his account. An angry Sumita Deb, Dey’s daughter, blasted chief minister Mamata Banerjee and cited lack of cooperation on her part to help the family as the reason for not sending the singer’s body to Kolkata for cremation.

Deb put forward a simple argument — her father ran up a huge bill following hospitalisation for five months, and she asked for Mamata’s help in recovering the ‘lost’ money.

“The government never recognised our plea. I called the CM so many times. I had even shot off a strict letter to her and the commissioner of (Kolkata) police. But no one cared. In such a case, how do I honour her (Mamata’s) words,” asked Deb.

On Thursday morning, the CM called Sumita requesting her to allow the government to bring Dey’s body to Kolkata. When she refused to budge, Mamata proposed to bring the body for just 24 hours to allow the people to pay their last respects. Deb turned down both offers.
