Giving a theatrical twist to the 2008 musical film, Mamma Mia!, is Delhi University’s Gargi college. The girls of the college, along with some male professional singers, will be performing the musical compositions of the 70s Swedish band ABBA, tomorrow.
“The musical is a collective effort from the college. The participants include members of Euphonie — the western music society of the college, and some others students. To play the male roles in the musical, professional musicians have been called in,” says Vaishakha Saxena, a third year student of the college.
The final team of about 50 students that includes singers, dancers and actors was selected after auditions held in October, last year, for the musical that is being directed by George Pulinkala. The performers will present the same script of the musical in a one and a half hour production. “We’ve adapted the exact script of the film in a theatrical form. However, we have tried to give the characters an identity of our own,” she says.
The story of the musical is set on an island where a young girl, Sophie, is about to married. Through her mother’s diary, she discovers that one of three men, who visited the island years ago, could be her father. She traces and invites all of them to the wedding so that the real father may give away the bride. The story unfolds amidst an enchanting joy de vivre.
“We’ve been rehearsing for the musical since November last year. I will be playing the role of Sophie and it was fun to adapt myself to the character. I really enjoyed working in this production,” says Aliya Singh, a second year student of the college and a member of Euphonie. At the function, the newly constructed auditorium of the college
will also be inaugurated by Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit.
