Theatre lovers in the city are in for a treat this Sunday, with Raell Padamsee’s latest venture, Broadway and Beyond. The daughter of renowned theatre artists Alyque and Pearl Padamsee, Raell feels that she is “entrenched” in musical theatre as she has grown up with it.
This unique project features some of the biggest names from musical theatre. Veterans like Joe Alvares, Shahriyar Atai, Louis Banks and Delna Mody will come together for one performance. “Joe worked in Jesus Christ Superstar that was made by my father a long time ago. He is an excellent artist,” says Raell. The veterans will share the stage with new talents Armaan Malik and Tara Sutaria.
Asked about her choice of casting, Raell replies, “Artists love the stage and for established ones, it’s always a delight to perform live before their fans. People like Louis (Banks) cannot keep away from the stage because they love their fans.”
The evening will feature bits from some of the world’s best-known musicals, such as Chicago, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret and Mamma Mia. Another highlight will be a performance by popular jazz artist Louis Banks.
“Louis is an amazing composer and performer. We worked together in Macbeth earlier,” says Raell. Talking about his role in Broadway and Beyond, an excited Louis says, “I’ll be performing one jazz segment with Joe Alvares and it will be very different from the ‘broadway’ genre of music. We’ll be taking a couple of new jazz standards very differently.”
Unlike conventional theatre performances, the organisers promise that this musical will keep the audience involved. “It’s an extremely interactive play where the audience will literally be on their toes throughout the evening,” laughs Padamsee, adding, “And Hormuzd Khambatta’s dance troupe will ensure that.”
Raell Padamsee’s Broadway and Beyond will be staged at the Tata Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point on Sunday, June 17 at 7 pm.
