Chart-topping Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s arrest on Sunday has caused quite a stir.
The singer and his manager, Maroof (who doesn’t use a last name), were detained by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials at the IGI Airport in the Capital as he was about to board a flight to Lahore, for allegedly carrying close to $1, 24, 000 (R56,34,560) in cash, in his and his team’s baggage.
Rahat was in the Capital to perform at the wedding reception of stylist Pernia Qureshi and entrepreneur Arjun Prasad held on Saturday night. “He sang beautifully that night, but this arrest is a complete shock. Maybe it was the payment for the performance. We hope this gets sorted out soon,” said a source who attended the event, wishing not to be named.
On Monday afternoon, the DRI was yet to decide the further action against Rahat, but support for him has already started to trickle in from both sides of the border. “I’m sure this is due to some confusion. Rahat’s so popular in India and Pakistan, he’d hardly do something that would cause so much trouble deliberately,” says Pakistani actor Veena Malik. “I’m not sure about all the legalities involved, but as long as he hasn’t done anything against the law, I’m sure this should sort itself out,” says actor Pooja Bedi.
The Pakistani High Commission in Delhi has set up a special team to liaise with the DRI on the matter, diplomatic talks are on both sides of the border. Khan’s detention dominated most Pakistani media on Sunday and Monday.
