I believe in versatility: Javed Ali

For singer Javed Ali, music is all about experimenting — be it with his voice or genres. “I enjoy singing in all the genres. When you have fun doing something, you should immerse yourself in it completely. I like to experiment with all genres,” says the singer who made his musical debut in Bollywood in 2000.

Ali also talks about an interesting new development.

Javed Ali“These days many singers stylise their voices for different songs. They sing in a different style to accommodate the song’s demand. I have done that too for many songs,” he quips. “I have got a lot of appreciation from people and they really like my voice in Sufi songs, so I will continue with that, but I’m also experimenting with other types of songs,” he informs.Ali, whose latest song Tum Tak from the movie Raanjhanaa is making waves, says he shares a special bond with music composer AR Rahman. “I have sung songs with a lot of music composers such as Pritam and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. But, with some composers you develop a special understanding. Rahman sir and I have a good understanding. But he only calls me when he feels my voice suits the song,” says Ali.

Born and brought up in Delhi, Ali gets nostalgic every time he visits the Capital. “I like Delhi’s bol-chaal, the food and of course the historical places. I have a huge attachment to this place as I have grown up here,” he says fondly. When asked who his favourite contemporary singers are, Ali says, “KK, Sonu Nigam and Mohit Chauhan. Mohit has a great soulful voice that I really like.”
