You couldn’t have gone through the period from the ’90s to the 2000s without
being a huge part of your playlist. If she wasn’t crooning to you on loop at your favourite nightclub on the cusp of the Millennium (who can forget the earworm ‘Waiting for tonight’), she was probably inspiring you to get a better body (like those abs in ‘If you had my love’).JLo’s name has been synonymous with multi-faceted talent, be it singing, acting or dancing. In this email interview, we chat with the star about the latest in her music career.
How was the experience of performing at the World Cup opening ceremony?
It was so exciting… Going out on the field, the stadium filled with a hundred thousand people, knowing that two billion people are watching… It’s such a world stage. It was really a rush. It was just one of those surreal, fun moments in your life that you can’t believe are happening. I am really glad I got the experience.

You’re an idol for many pop singers. Tell us about your inspirations while growing up.
I loved watching movies and music, so musicals were probably my favourite thing. That was my biggest inspiration — watching musicals with my mom on the couch. They really inspired me to act, sing and dance. Not just do one, but do all of it, because in a musical you have to do all three.
You are known for your signature pop sound. How is your new album AKA different from your previous ones?
In the first eight albums, I always spoke about love, and love has always been my subject. It still is, as an artiste. But it was always in this fairy tale kind of way… I think it took me that long (four years) to get back and do another album because I was doing a lot of soul searching and a lot of growing up.
(I was) going through a transitive, transformational time in my life, where my ideas about love changed. They have got stronger, I’d like to think. And that strength — musically, lyrically and emotionally — is what I think is different about this album... I really feel like I am in the best place of my life, and that’s what has reflected in this album.
What are the current recording and touring projects you are working on?
I am thinking about doing a new Spanish album soon. Also, I plan to tour with the (new) album all over the world, but we have no concrete information as of now. We are deciding how we are going to juggle everything with my reality singing show (she’s one of the judges) and everything else we are trying to do over the next year.
