Inflation finds voice in a song

Saare jahaan se achcha Hindustan hamara… goes Iqbal’s famous anthem of our freedom struggle. Now, playing on it, giving the words a twist in light of the current price rise, comes Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga (SJSM), a follow-up film to the 2010 satire, Phas Gaye Re Obama.

“It’s not strictly a sequel since the earlier film focused on recession, while this one deals with inflation. It was fuelled by the hike in onion prices (Rs 70 per kg) in February 2011,” says Ashok Pandey, producer.

The film directed by Anshul Sharma was earlier titled Apni To Lag Gayee. SJSM revolves around the common man’s woes. The title song puns on the fact that he is being exploited by the “Left”, “Right” and “Centre” as no government is able to tackle this burning issue. Are they afraid of controversies? “We’re not being preachy or judgemental. We’re simply mirroring what’s happening. I’ve lived in USA for 25 years and travelled widely. And I can tell you that Mumbai is one of the most expensive cities in the world,” he says. About reactions to the film’s preview shows, he says, “People have come out laughing after watching it. Even though we have talented actors like Sanjay Mishra and Zakir Hussain, I’m confident that the story is the star.”

The song goes...
Income to saali banjh hui,
mehengai ke paanv hain bhaari,
Roz jaane ye price nayee,
har roz bardhe laacharie…

Left se lag gayee…
Right se lag gayee…
Centre se lag gayee…
