Is it just me or are there actually very few clubs in Mumbai that play Bollywood music? I think over the course of this year, most clubs I have been to have not been playing Bollywood music. In fact, I have seen an upward trend, however marginal, of the current US or UK top 40 songs popping up on most DJ playlists. Does this mean that we are all set for a return of international music in clubs much like it used to be in the early ’90s, before Bollywood took over?
Well, I certainly hope so, with most film music turning out to be boring and mundane and not ‘cool’ enough to be played in a clubs. There was a time when film music stepped up to the call of the west and went superbly pop, but a stagnancy has stepped in now. This year has seen no breakout hits. Munni badnaam... and Sheila ki jawani.. are just a faded memory.
Which means that most exposed and commercial music listener once again turns to the west for their international ‘fix’. And boy, are they getting it, with global chart-busters like, Rihanna’s Only girl in the world..., LMFAO’s Party rock anthem..., David Guetta’s Sweat..., Lady Gaga’s Born this way... and the massive club smash that’s still going strong, Pitbull’s Give me everything....
So I hope that this trend continues, for it’s always good to have a mix of things rather than an overdose of one. And remember, overdose always kills…if I may say so.

Coldplay are on a roll after the success of their last album, having survived writer’s block and what not. The chart topping Teardrop... is on everyone’s lips and portable music players as we know. But how does the rest of the album hold up? Very well, in my opinion. Now I’m not the biggest fan but Chris Martin has evolved or devolved (depending on how purist you are) into a fine pop songwriter. Bright and sunny, yet introspective enough to not go too deep. A concept album about two characters who form the title of the band. Go figure.
Florence And The Machine
The follow-up to 2009’s stunning Lungs by Florence Welch, brings her scorching songwriting talents to yet another magnificent piece of work. Booming drums, soaring vocals, ethereal arrangements make this an aural delight. I am only reminded fleetingly of Kate Bush, who’s musical ideologies resonate within Florence’s sonic walls. Although it is heavily produced, I am still blown away by its sheer comforting audacity.

I appeal to all the musically insane people out there to discover the genius of Tom Waits. Poet, philosopher, wise man, wandering minstrel, I could go on… this is his first album in seven years and it feels like he never left. Sixty-one years young and seventeen albums old, Tom Waits is a curio of rock n’ roll that comes along once in a while. He is an unpredictable djinn, who brings his own brand of bone-rattling songs about heartbreak and desolation to an ever-changing world.

Grammy award- winning country songstress bounces back after her tour de force 2009 album, Revolution, which gave us, ‘The house that built me...’ There are a few successful voices in country music today, and Miranda Lambert is one of them. On her fourth album, she digs deeper and pulls out a richer sound that underlines an already mature songwriting style. And as I always mention, country music is as simple as it is difficult, and thank god for Miranda who makes it seem the former.
