Mumbai locals were shocked to see 50,000 people turn up for Justin Bieber’s gig on Wednesday evening. Most say it felt like it was the biggest concert in Mumbai after Michael Jackson’s gig in 1996.

With over 50,000 people in attendance, many feel Bieber’s concert was the biggest in India after Michael Jackson performed in the country in 1996.

“Humne toh aisa paagalpan Jackson ji ke time pe dekha tha . Woh din tha aur aj ka din hai. Mumbai ki sadkon pe aisa traffic jam hua hai ek show ki wajah se,” (We haven’t seen this madness since Michael Jackson’s concert. This is the first time Mumbai has experienced this kind of traffic jam), said Raju, a local cab driver who was stuck outside the DY Patil stadium for two hours because of the chaotic jam.

“Ladkian itni pagal bhi ho sakti hain kisi ke liye kya ? Itna toh shayad Shah Rukh ya Salman ke liye bhi nai hota hoga. Subah se bhid lagi hui hai, aur log khatam hi nai ho rahe,” (Can girls be so crazy about someone? Not even for Shah Rukh or Salman have we seen this much craziness. The crowd has been there since morning, it is never ending), said Ganesh, who sells cigarettes not more than 100 metres away from the stadium.

Although they admitted they didn’t know who Bieber was, following the mass hysteria, the two have vowed to listen to his songs.

It was a similar case for a local policeman, Pravin (name changed on request), one of the 1500 policemen deployed by Mumbai Police to ensure proper security for the event. He told us:“Itna logon mein craze dekh ke lagta hai ki kuch toh hogi isme bat. Main iske gaane sunna shuru karunga aj se hi,” (Considering the craze among the people, I think I will start listening to his songs).
