With an increase in the number of people downloading music for free, live shows are the only way for musicians to make money. This trend is proving a blessing in disguise for many musicians, especially for singer Kanika Kapoor who loves the concept of live performances.

“I love the concept of doing live shows. There are so many types of these shows - a corporate gig, a private gig or in a pub or just a normal concert where everyone is allowed to come in. Each one of them has a different vibe and it’s a different feeling,” she says adding that it helps to connect one with one’s fans.

“Live shows are so transparent. People who are there to listen to you, are there because they want to enjoy a performance. There’s no lying, no arrogance or money involved. It’s just a group of people coming together under one roof and enjoying. It’s very personal for me and I love doing it,” she says.

The 37-year-old agrees that while Bollywood has given her a bigger platform, live shows will always be closer to her heart and they still form a major source of revenue for musicians. “It’s okay to know that a song can be downloaded for free. As long as people are enjoying the content, it hardly matters whether they are consuming it for free or paying money for it. For us, doing live shows remain the only way to earn money and frankly I am happy with that,” she signs off.
