As the world celebrates Christmas on Friday, Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan has a musical surprise in store for his fans.
Amjad Ali Khan, who was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 2001, posted a video on his Facebook account where he is playing the famous Christmas carol ‘Jingle Bells’ on his sarod. Wishing fans on Christmas, the classical musician wrote on Facebook, “Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way...Oh, what fun it is to ride, In a one horse open sleigh....AND this is the way we do in our special style on the ?#?sarod? !! Experimented with something different in the spirit of ?#?Christmas?....Merry ?#?Xmas? ! ?#?MerryChristmas?”
Amjad Ali Khan’s collaborations include duets with violinist Igor Frolov, guitarist Charley Byrd, guitarist Alvaro Pierri, Suprano Glenda Simpson and guitarist Barry Mason. He also gave a peace concert at the United Nations in New York in the presence of the UN secretary general Ban-Ki-Moon, in 2010. Khan has participated in concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1997 for celebrating India’s 50th year of Independence in 2000 at Stony Brook University, and in 2006 to mark the 100 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha Movement. He also performed at the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament on the commemoration of India’s 60th year of Independence in 2007.
Amjad Ali Khan was nominated for a Grammy award in the best traditional world music album category in 2009 for the album ‘Ancient Sounds’, a joint-venture with Iraqi oud soloist Rahim Alhaj.
