Music lovers in the city have something to look forward to this weekend. Be it heavy metal, soft blues, jazz or classic rock, a music and art festival called Escape to Zorba 3, has it all. This mini festival is a curtain raiser to the fifth edition of Escape Festival of Art and Music, 2012, which will be held at Naukuchiatal in Uttarakhand in May this year. And, it will see many musicians, photographers, painters, visual and graffiti artists come together.
“Around 80% of the crowd at the previous Escape Festivals have been from Delhi. That’s why the curtain raiser is being held in the city,” says festival director, L (Mama) Tochhawng. The festival began with the aim to provide a platform to emerging artists and has been a success since its launch in 2008. “We combine few established names with lesser known ones in order to provide the budding artists an opportunity to reach out to a large audience,” says Tochhawng.
The bands that will perform at the event include Skinny Alley, Half Step Down and Goddess Gagged. While day one will feature high energy performances, day two will have gentler music. And the concluding day will see a jam session by various bands.
Another major highlight of the festival is a photography and art exhibition by artists Shiv Ahuja, Asif Khan, Rahul Lal and Vijay Kate, among others. Ahuja, who has an experience of four years in concert photography, says, “In this build up to the main event, I’ve tried to tell a story about the festival through photos. At the event at Naukuchiatal, many creative people put up in tents next to the lake. And one can feel a lot of positive vibes seeing them practice and discuss off stage. I’ve tried to capture the life out there and also the music scene through my pictures.” While at the festival you can also get yourself tattooed at a stall put up at the event.
