On July 18, 2012, Anand’s safar came to an end and just 24 hours later, music company Sa Re Ga Ma, has planned a two-CD tribute to the phenomenon of the 1970s — Rajesh Khanna. The CD titled Super Star: Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli has just gone into production and is expected to be in the stores in a week’s time.

“It’s appropriate for us to salute the legend with a collection of his chartbusters since Rajesh Khanna’s entire musical catalogue is with Sa Re Ga Ma,” says Adarsh Gupta, the music company’s business head.

Gupta’s personal favourite is the popular number from Aradhana (1969), Mere sapnon ki rani kab aayegi tu. But he admits that Manna De’s song from Anand (1971), Zindagi kaisi hai paheli , is a better choice for the title because of its philosophical message and the fact that its reflective of the ‘anand’ (joy) the superstar brought to millions of fans across the world.

“We’d like his family to be present at the launch and will also request his Anand co-star, Amitabh Bachchan, to grace the occasion,” says Gupta. There are 15 songs in each CD that includes some all-time Kishore Kumar favourites like ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana’ (Andaz, 1971), ‘Zindagi ka safar’ (Aap Ki Kasam, 1973) and ‘Diya jalte hain’ (Namak Haram, 1973).

Also, rare gems like Lata-Kishore’s Chupke se dil dede (Maryada, 1971) and ‘Main to kuch bhi nahin’ (Daag, 1973) sung by Khanna himself.
