The city rocked. Only, it wasn’t Metallica who shook it up, but angry fans who wreaked havoc when the American heavy metal band’s concert was called off at the last minute. Outraged fans who had travelled from far-off cities set tickets and shirts afire and vandalised sets at the performance venue, Leisure Valley in Gurgaon, while Twitter and Facebook let loose a barrage of jokes on the city. YouTube videos of the incident started doing the rounds within minutes.
“The good thing about concerts in Delhi is the audience breaks the instruments before the rockers do,” tweeted greatbong. “Heard Delhi boys lost their cool when they found out that Metallica were gonna sing in English,” tweeted shadymumbai Angry Bombay Girl. “So did anyone scream ‘Metallica show cancelled? Tereko malum hai mera baap kaun hai?,” wrote Vinamra.
The band, which landed in the Capital on Friday afternoon, addressed the media minutes before the scheduled time of the concert but did not perform after a barricade near the stage reportedly fell and could not be repaired. An organiser then announced that the concert was postponed due to a “technical problem”, leaving 30,000 fans stranded. Later, Gurgaon police arrested four officials from the organising group, DNA Networks.
Cancellation theories afloat
Some claim that Metallica was not happy with the equipment given to them and decided not to perform. “Hetfield was furious at the sub-quality stuff they had waiting for them,” tweeted SaurabhKing.
Many say that while the capacity of the venue was 25,000, over 30,000 fans turned up with passes. “Organisers oversold tickets 3 to 1,” tweeted madmanweb Madhu ‘MadMan’ Menon.
There are reports that excited fans started creating chaos even before the concert was slated to begin, posing a security threat to the band. “We complain all the time that we get B grade bands n when a A lister like metallica comes, this is what we do! Shame,” tweeted Sapna Bhavnani, a hairstylist.
