If I sat down to train her, she wouldn’t have taken music seriously,” says Asha Bhosle about her granddaughter Zanai, who makes her singing debut in Maaee, in which Asha makes her acting debut at the age of 78. “I’ve trained her a bit, but we got a qualified teacher so that Zanai takes music lessons seriously. She has it in her to become a performer.”
The nine-year-old is also learning a classical dance form alongside classical music. “Zanai gets her expressions right because she knows her mudras well. I’m not boasting, but her voice quality is excellent. Also, the song required a voice like hers,” says grandmother Bhosle, who after completing the film next week, will be off for a month-long music tour.
Zanai has sung the song with late playback singer Kishore Kumar’s son, Amit. When asked if Asha’s older sister Lata Mangeshkar has heard the song, Bhosle beams, “Didi (elder sister) was raving about Zanai to me. She adores her and the song.” A couple of years ago, Asha had said that she wanted to pass on her legacy to Zanai. Is this song the first step towards that? “No,” she says. “I want her to complete her formal education first. I won’t let her sing in any other film till then.”
