Nikhil Chinapa made for music

Highlight Story

He’s most famous for being a successful VJ on a music television channel, but Nikhil Chinapa is a man who wears many hats. He has established himself as a DJ, has a regular radio show, and also has a music company called Submerge that arranges gigs by international DJs in the country.

“Indians love dance music and all international DJs who perform here agree that the audience gives a great response to global dance music,” says Nikhil, who has also dabbled in acting. Talking about his Bollywood innings, he says, “I did Shaitan (2011) and David because I enjoy working with Bejoy Nambiar (director). But otherwise, I have very limited interest in acting... I love music.”

“And anyway, I don’t understand this obsession of people from varied professions to get into Bollywood. Why does everyone — be it a dancer, musician or anybody else, have to enter Bollywood!” the 40-year-old muses.

Interestingly, Nikhil has a degree in architecture and would have been an architect had it not been for a VJ hunt he auditioned for in 1997. “The audition was the first ever audition held by the music channel worldwide. In fact, it became the template for other auditions that were held across the world,” says Nikhil, who recently launched his first compilation album, Defected in the House India 2013.

“I chose house music for my first compilation album because I love listening to it and the audience loves it too. In fact, 98% of my gigs are sold out,” he says.
