Born into a family of musicians hailing from Rajasthan, Roopkumar Rathod was initiated early into music. He was the most sought after tabla player at the age of 18 in the early 80's before he made his transition into singing.

Mahesh Bhatt's Gumraah (1989), starring Sridevi and Sanjay Dutt, marked his initiation into playback singing in Bollywood with the song Main Tera Aashiq Hoon. Since then, he has lent his voice to many mainstream Bollywood stars.

His ticket to success was the chartbuster Sandese Aate Hain from Border (1997). He also sang for Randeep Hooda in Kahe Sataye from Rang Rasiya.
