Highlight Story

Meet the Delhi-based band, Chakra, which will be performing in the Capital today The members of electronic alternative band, Chakra, talk to us about their music.

What sort of music can we expect from Chakra?
We’re experimental, but we mainly do alternative, blues and progressive music.

How did the band come together?
We were all pursuing music in our own capacities till about six months back. Sunny Singh (lead guitarist) and Karan Singh (drummer), while performing at a music Festival, came to know about Abhinav Pandey (vocalist). Soon, they collaborated and the band was formed. Vaibhav Nautiyal (bassist) and Pratiek Sawhney (keyboardist) came on board soon after that.

Why this name?
To us, ‘chakra’ means a full circle. It represents infinity and completeness. We aspire to do the same with our music.

What do you think people remember most about your gigs?
Our music, and the way we play on the stage. We are often told that we have a great stage presence.

What do you think of the music scene in Delhi? Has it changed over the years?
The music scene in Delhi has changed a lot. There are more than 200 bands in the city currently, which is a hefty number, and even the music has improved in this period.

What, according to you, has been the most inspiring song, event and artist for the band?
While Nothing Man by Pearl Jam has been the most inspiring song, the most inspiring event has been watching Pink Floyd reunite at the O2 arena in London last year. They also happen to be the most inspiring artists for us.

Do you guys enjoy performing in Delhi? Why?
Yes, very much. Delhi has a crowd that appreciates music and musicians. That’s what a musician looks for.

What would you say is the best place in Delhi to make music?
We have had the best experience at Sound Station in Okhla and at our own home studio too.

Would you say Delhi inspires artists?
Yes. We’ve seen musicians shifting to Delhi for the same purpose. In our band too, we’ve got two such members.

If you could play at any gig in the world, it would be...
We would love to open for Pink Floyd/ Pearl Jam/ Radiohead.

What has been the best moment for the band?
Playing together for the first time at Sound station, Okhla in April 2012.
