Highlight Story

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (SEL), who recently became the first Bollywood composers to launch their own iPhone application, are already in the midst of another novel project. The trio will become the second Bollywood team, after Vishal-Shekhar, to launch their own record label, SEL Songs.

Says Ehsaan Noorani, “SEL Songs has been underway for a while, but we will hopefully be launching it soon now. We want the label to put out everything from advertising work to Broadway music to trance; so we are tying up with the right channels including publishers, distributors, etc.”

Reach out to fans
Adds Shankar Mahadevan. “We now want our music to reach people directly, without having to rely on films.”

Though the label will cover all sorts of artistes and genres, the first album will belong to SEL. “It will be an album of our non-Bollywood compositions” says Loy Mendonca.

Shankar"Between the three of us, we cover the entire spectrum of music," says Mahadevan. "So tomorrow you may have a piano-based album by Loy, or a blues guitar album by Ehsaan, or a jazz standard with Indian classical melody by the three of us. But we are looking at everything from singers from the interiors of India to Lebanese musicians for our label."

Non-film identity
Noorani says that they have been trying to create a non-film identity for a while now, and creating their own iphone app was the first step in that direction. “The app, which will have all the info about our music will make us more accessible to our fans.”

“We will also be putting sneak previews of our raw tunes on it,” adds Mendonca. “For example, we are creating an Indian adaptation of the song, Happy birthday... We have put up the hook line for now, and we’ll keep updating it till we get the final version. This way fans can learn how music is actually created.”
