Over the past year or so, they have delivered back-to-back hits in films such as Shah Rukh Khan’s RA.One (2011), Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Picture (2011) and Kahaani (2012). And now, Shekhar Ravjiani — one half of the famous music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar — is going solo for his first-ever Marathi single, Saazani, Shekhar, who has also sung the number besides composing it, will perform it for the first time today on the Marathi music reality show Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

“I always wanted to do a Marathi song considering Maharashtra has always been special for me. Not just now, in the past too, I have spent a lot of time in the state, especially Nashik. We had a farmhouse there that I would visit a lot as a kid. Plus, I am very fond of Marathi music,” says Shekhar, who finds Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Suresh Wadkar “absolutely

amazing”.

For Shekhar’s Marathi song, Ravi Jadhav, director of National Award winning films Natrang and Bal Gandharva wrote the lyric. Says Shekhar, “I am happy that people have heard and complimented me for the song. I made people from a TV channel hear it and they said, ‘yeh to koi Marathi inssan hi gaa sakta hai (only a Marathi person can sing this),’” says Shekhar.

Marathi singer Bela Shinde, who has sung a few lines along with Shekhar, helped him with pronunciations and intonations. Proceeds from the song’s download, callertunes and ring tones will go to Ma Niketan, an NGO that’s involved in giving shelter to abandoned kids, especially girls.

“For years, I have been close to the Ma Niketan. So, it’s all turning out well,” says Shekhar who, along with Vishal Dadlani, will compose music for their first Marathi film, BP (Balak-Palak), directed by Jadhav.
