After legendary singing sisters — Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, the newest sibling duo to lend their voice in Bollywood are Shraddha and Shweta Pandit. The young playback singers are the fourth generation of vocalists in their musical lineage. Daughters of tabla player Vishwaraj Pandit, the two are nieces of music directors Jatin-Lalit and grandnieces of Pandit Jasraj.
And like the renowned singer siblings, Shraddha and Shweta too will now be seen singing together for a film, Yash Raj Film’s Ladies Vs Ricky Behl, a feat that has not been realised since Lata and Asha’s collaborative days.
“I think it’s not happened in this generation. I wouldn’t compare us with Lataji and Ashaji because they are veterans and true legends, but it’s a great inspiration for many young talents who wants to make it in music,” says Shweta, adding, “It’s just a coincidence that we are both singers in the family.”
The film’s soundtrack is composed by brothers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and will see the sisters perform duets with Salim and Vishal Dadlani respectively.
Shweta’s admission to Bollywood took place more than a decade ago, being launched as a 12-year-old singing for Yash Raj film’s Mohabbatein (2000). “I was the first kid to be launched as a playback singer in the industry. I had sung all the songs in Mohabattein for Shamita Shetty. It was a dream start,” claims Shewta, who was last heard in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. For sister Shraddha, it’s her maiden venture with the production house.
“It’s an honour to be working with such a big team. It’s a great opportunity that Shweta and I got to be part of the same film,” says Shraddha who has sung for movies like Love Breakups Zindagi and Aazaan previously.
Ask her what the sister collaboration means to her and Shraddha says, “We all know that Lataji and Ashaji are great icons and it’s a great feeling that after them we are the first to get this opportunity. We have never sung together before this.”
After the success of Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), newbie couple Ranveer Kapoor and Anushka Sharma too will team up once again for Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, directed by Maneesh Sharma. The film is also a launchpad for actor Priyanka Chopra’s cousin, Parineeti.
“Shraddha’s song was recorded earlier. They were launching a new face — Parineeti Chopra — so they were looking for a new voice and thought of her,” says younger sister Shweta, who lent vocals for Anushka in the film. While Shweta has sung Thagle, Shraddha has crooned on Jigar Da Tukra in the film.
