Long before Kolaveri Di went viral November last year, a teenager from Dehradun was making waves on YouTube.com with videos of herself performing popular Bollywood covers.
The amateurish home videos shot in a bedroom and featuring sixteen-year-old Shradhha Sharma on the acoustic guitar attracted curious netizens to this singer; perhaps not only for her melodious voice but also for the school-girlish charm she exuded.
And now, after uploading over 20 covers including Zara Zara (Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein, 2001) and Dil Toh Bachha Hai Ji (Ishqiya, 2010), some of which got as many as two million hits, Shraddha is now out with her first original composition, titled Just Trust Me.
"This song is about a young girl telling her mom not to worry about her daughter as she is capable of making the right choices and decisions in life," says Shradhha, who studies in class 12. Ask if her own mother worries for her and she says, "Yes, she has to answer a lot of calls from people who want to speak to me. This worries her. So the song is my way of telling her and all other mothers to have faith in their children."
For her debut original number, Shraddha collaborated with musician Dhruv Ghanekar, who also co-composed the song, and lyricist Swanand Kirkire. "It feels nice to be working with them. As a singer, I’m glad that people are liking my song," says she, adding, "In the future, I plan to collaborate with more people and post more songs."
Does she want to pursue a career in music? "I am definitely pushing myself to prepare for that. But for now, I just want to see what response my first song gets," she says.
Besides being touted as a YouTube sensation, Shraddha has 10 Facebook fanpages dedicated to her, one of them boasting as many as 157,500 likes.
