Every Odia and even every Indian who has had some contact with western Odisha would know the cult Sambalpuri folk song Rangabati. Now, Bollywood singer Sona Mohapatra, with music director Ram Sampath, has given it a contemporary touch and it’s already a rage. The song was released on YouTube on July 3 and will be aired on MTV Channel’s Coke Studio Season 4 on July 5.

With her charismatic full-blooded voice and fetching presence, Sona Mohapatra gives a vibrant, contemporary touch to the folk song, without robbing it of its soul. The basic tune remains true to the original but the background music has a fair sprinkling of electronic sounds as padding.

The song also features another Odia sensation, Rituraj Mohanty who won India’s Raw Star contest in 2014. He will be singing a popular ditty Bande Utkala Janani, eulogising Odisha. The song also has a funky Tamil-English rap done by Tony Sebastian and Rajesh Radhakrishnan.
