Think of Khandala, the famous Maharashtrian hill station, and one song that automatically comes to mind is the hit number, Aati Kya Khandala? The song that was picturised on actors Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji in the 1998 hit film, Ghulam, also marked Aamir’s debut as a singer.
The four minute 12 seconds long song, which is one of the nominated songs in the list of Cinema@100, a Fever and Hindustan Times initiative that celebrates 100 years of Indian cinema, became an instant hit and is still considered as one of the most popular songs of Bollywood. The popularity of the song, that was penned by Nitin Raikawar, can be gauged from the fact that Rani became famous as the ‘Khandala Girl’ – a tag that is still associated with her after so many years.
The USP or the ‘hatke’ aspect of the song was that it touched upon a style of speaking that is typical in Maharashtra. The song has an interesting backstory. Nitin had met Aamir while the latter was working in Ghulam. He, along with friend Neeraj Vora, sang Aati Kya Khandala to Aamir, who liked it so much that he asked film’s director Vikram Bhatt to hear it. Not many know that the song was included in the film at the last minute. “We had completed the film but when I heard the song. I wanted it to be in the film. So we deleted a few scenes to accommodate the song. When I heard the song, I knew only Aamir could do justice to it. When I told him to sing, HE was like, ‘Are you mad!’ But we convinced him and the rest is history.” Later, music directors Jatin-Lalit polished the tune. Tune in
