The Bodyguard (1992)
This OST became the first album to sell more than a million copies in a single week. Whitney Houston starred and sang six of the songs in the movie, two of which, Run to you and I have nothing were nominated for the Oscars. The album has sold 42 million copies worldwide.
Saturday Night Fever (1977)
Most of the album was composed and performed by The Bee Gees, featuring their monster hit Stayin’ alive. The album, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year, is held responsible for keeping the disco era alive for a long time and for launching John Travolta, the film’s lead, as the next big Hollywood star. It has sold 40 million copies across the world.
Dirty Dancing (1987)
The Patrick Swayze movie spent 18 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 album sales charts and more than 230 weeks in the top 30. The single The time of my life won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the best original song as well as a Grammy for the best duet for singers Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. The album has gone platinum 11 times, selling 32 million copies.
Director James Cameron teamed up with composer James Horner for the disaster movie and the two came up with the highest selling primarily orchestral film score in history, selling 30 million copies. It remained at the top of the Billboard 200 charts for more than 16 weeks, the last album to do so. Celine Dion’s My heart will go on, one of the only two non-orchestral songs, won the year’s Oscar for Best Original song.
The OST of the movie, based on Warren Casey’s musical, had more than 20 original songs, performed by various artistes including the movie’s lead actors, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Three of its songs, including the Oscar-nominated Hopelessly devoted to you, became Billboard number one hits, and sold 28 million copies.
Purple Rain (1984)
The popular American pop artiste Prince debuted with the movie. Along with The Revolution, he composed the soundtrack too, which went on to be ranked by Time magazine as the 15th greatest album of all time. The album went platinum 13 times over, winning Prince three Grammy awards and an Oscar for the best original score for the title song. It has sold 20 million copies.
The Lion King (1994)
The only animation flick whose OST grossed more than 10 million copies, the score by Hans Zimmer won it an Oscar, as did the song, Can you feel the love tonight won Elton John and Tim Rice — for the best original song.
The Kevin Bacon movie about rock music and dance featured songs by various artistes including Kenny Loggins and Bonnie Taylor. Two of its songs, Footloose and Let’s hear it for the boy, made it to the Billboard Hot 100 charts and the movie went on to sell 13 million copies, garnering an Oscar Nomination for best music.
Top gun (1986)
The action packed Tom Cruise starrer, which also featured songs by Kenny Loggins and various other artistes, went up to the top of the Billboard 200 charts for several weeks at different times in the year. Top gun anthem, an instrumental rock song by Harold Faltermeyer & Steve Stevens won a Grammy for the best pop instrumental
performance, while the album sold 10
Waiting to exhale (1995)
The OST of the movie featured many African-American female artistes like Toni Braxton, Mary J Blige, Shanna Wylie and Whitney Houston, who also starred in the movie. The album went platinum seven times, and one of its song, Exhale, became only the third single in U S history to enter the Billboard Hot 100 charts at no 1. The album has sold 10 million copies.
