Urvashi Urvashi gets reimagined, this time as a feminist anthem. Watch it here
AR Rahman’s 23-year-old song from Kadhalaan has now been reimagined to give a clearer, better picture of feminism in the country by Breakthrough India. Watch it here.
AR Rahman’s hit song Urvasi from Kadhalaan may have been introduced to the world 23 years ago, but it keeps finding new meanings every few years. After being used in Oscar-nominated film Lion and getting reimagined by AR Rahman himself for Coke Studio, the song has been turned into a feminist anthem by Breakthrough India.
The new song asks women to not take anything lying down and break the glass ceiling. “This society, patriarchy, we don’t want it Urvasi,” say the vocals from Shobha SV and Saumya Agarwal.
The video has three women lip-synching and dancing to the song. They call on women to teach the world that consent has only one meaning, and exhort them to make their life extraordinary.
“22 years after it was released, we decided to work on it again to reflect the realities of women. There is just one message that we wish to convey with this video... Girl, you’re awesome. There will be those who will want to keep you subdued. But remember, that it’s all bull***t,” reads the description to the video shared on Facebook. It has earned 40,000 views in 24 hours.
